What is Transurethral resection of the prostrate (TURP)

Transurethral resection of the prostrate (TURP) is the most frequently performed operation for prostate enlargement. There are some side effects however:

  1. Retrograde ejaculation- this means that when you ejaculate during sexual intercourse the semen goes back into the bladder and is passed in the urine the next time you go to the toilet.
  2. Impotence- there can be a deterioration in the erection in 0-10% men.
  3. Incontinence- there is a small risk (1%) of leaking urine after the operation.

The Operation

You will be taken to Theatre where a small instrument called a Resectoscope will be passed through the penis and in through the urethra. The middle of the enlarged prostate is cut away.

During the operation a catheter (hollow tube) will be passed up the urethra into the bladder to drain the urine. This will be removed approximately 48 hours after your operation.

Bags of fluid will wash out your bladder during and after the operation to clear blood and debris. This will be stopped after 24 hours or when your urine begins to clear.

The operation usually takes about 60 minutes after which you will be brought back to the ward. The Nurses will check your blood pressure, pulse and temperature. They will give you tablets or an injection for any pain or sickness.
