Liposuction (Body Reshaping)

Does this sound familiar ?

You've done everything you can to lose weight, you've exercised and you've watched your weight. In fact you have taken off excess pounds. But there are certain areas of your body that still look fat or out of proportion. And no matter how you try these trouble areas don't seem to want to go away.

Body Reshaping

The solution to this problem is body reshaping. Whatever your size or shape you are born with a specific number of fat cells which remain constant for the whole of your life. When people start to put weight on it is not the introduction of new fat cells, merely the expansion of existing cells. The solution to lose weight in a specific body area is to remove the fat cells from that area.

Once the fat cells are removed your body does not generally replace them. Should you gain weight after liposuction it goes to the fat cells which remain in your body.

The surgical procedure used to reshape the body is called liposculpture or liposuction.

Liposuction

Liposuction surgery is the removal of unwanted bulges created by excess localised fat deposits. The most ocmmon areas for this surgery are:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Waist
  • Male Breasts

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic and can be performed as a day case, taking approximately one hour.

What happens after the operation ?

Your Surgeon will ask you to wear a snug fitting elastic girdle or body stocking over the treated area to control swelling and bleeding and to help your skin shrink to fit your new body contour. You will need to wear this garment continuously for up to six weeks, depending on what your Surgeon states.

Is there scarring ?

The scars from this surgery are minimal and are approximately 1/4 inch and wherever possible are placed in a body fold or crease so are therefore not visible.

Is this procedure dangerous ?

Every surgical procedure carries risks, even having a tooth extracted. However liposuction is a relatively minor procedure. Liposuction has been shown to be very safe with very few complications.

When will I be back to normal ?

You will probably have some discomfort after surgery and possibly be even a little heavier. The suction areas will be swollen and bruised and you may feel a burning sensation.

The pain can be controlled with medication prescribed by your Surgeon. You may also temporarily lose feeling in the suction area.

Healing is gradual. Your Surgeon will probably advise you to start walking around as soon as possible and most patients are performing routine duties after 2 days.

You will however be advised to avoid more strenuous activity for 2-4 weeks. The stitches, if not soluble, will be removed approximately 7 days after surgery and you should be back to work within 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on the extent of your procedure and your occupation.

Why Abdominoplasty and not Liposuction ?

If you have stretched or saggy abdominal skin or weak muscle tone then it is very likely that your Surgeon will recommend an abdominoplasty.
