Facelift / Mini Facelift
Facelift
Wrinkles, sagging skin, laxity in the jowls and neck begin to appear after
many years of exposure to the sun and wind, making your skin look tired and
dull. For many the option of a facelift was considered to be only for celebrities.
But in today's society, a face lift (rhytidectomy) is very common.
What does a facelift do ?
A face lift provides an overall lift to the lower third of your face by tightening
loose skin in the jowls, neck and jaw line.
It does not correct the visible signs of ageing in the upper face. It does
not remove crows feet, wrinkles or bags from your eyes but these areas can also
be treated at the same time as the facelift.
Your Surgeon will discuss your expectations and the probable outcomes of the
surgery.
What happens after surgery ?
There will be bruising and swelling that will last for a few days and the pain
experienced can be controlled by oral medication.
Bandages are removed after a couple of days after which you may then go home
and take a shower and wash your hair
Sutures are removed to ensure that scarring is minimal.
The healing process is gradual - after two weeks you should feel comfortable
with make up and after three weeks you should feel confident enough to go out
with friends again.
After ten to twelve weeks your face will feel normal and you should be delighted
with your new, more youthful and relaxed appearance.
Direct sunlight should be avoided for several weeks.
How does it work ?
Patients usually receive premedication to relax the patient and an anaesthetic
with the patient asleep.
The Surgeon operates on a side at a time with the incision being placed in
the natural crease of the facial skin and beginning inside the hairline, in
the temple area above and forward of the ear. The skin is lifted and the underlying
muscles and tissues tightened and repositioned. Excess skin fat may be removed
and the incision is closed with fine sutures or metal clips. If metal clips
are used, shaving hair from the incision site may be avoided.
This procedure lasts between two and four hours depending on the extent of
the procedure.
How long does it last ?
Generally younger patients enjoy longer lasting results but your lifestyle,
skin type, sun exposure and heredity all play a role in determining how long
the results last.
