Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to flatten a protruding abdomen by tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall and removing excess fatty tissue and skin. It can be the result of weight gain or pregnancy.

There may be loose, wrinkled skin that has been overstretched with obvious stretch marks, the muscles may be stretched and a roll of fat may accumulate in the front of the lower abdomen. This no longer responds to diet and exercise.

How is the operation performed ?

This surgical procedure involves an incision around the belly button and another incision just above the pubic area from one hip to another, allowing the removal of surplus skin and fat. The incision is normally made low enough to be concealed by underwear or swimwear.

With this surgery you are normally in hospital for about 1-2 days. It is performed under a general anaesthetic. This is a more extensive cosmetic procedure than liposuction and the improvements can be dramatic.

What is the recovery period after surgery ?

Recovery time depends on the individual. Any pain or discomfort following surgery can be controlled with medication. During recovery you must refrain from strenuous activity or lifting.

Most patients are back to work within 4 weeks depending on the nature of your work.
